NW Co-ord Urges All To Lobby Their MPs

Derek Maylor, Chairperson of the NW BTU H&S Co-ord reminds all USRs that this week is European Week of Health and Safety and urges everyone to lobby their MP against the spending cuts which will impose severe damage to the HSE.

Derek said:

"Following the budget review the HSE have cuts of 35%, this is on the back of a 3 year freeze. LA's have cuts of 28% which affects their enforcement and there will be similar concerns for fire authorities.

All this means more risks in the workplace and increased risks to your families from work related issues caused by these cuts. This week workers across Europe will be demanding that health and safety becomes a workplace priority."

He urged everyone concerned about workplace health and safety to use this week's European campaign on health and safety to lobby their MPs. He continued:

" You do not need to write an essay just a few bullet points and there are issues on the website, such as workers need their safety and health protecting now more than ever.  There are more than a million workers  currently suffering from an illness or injury caused by their work, and last year over 30 million days were lost due to work-related sickness absence. This time off work cost employers £3.7 billion, yet much of this could have been prevented if they had taken better care of their staff."

Hazards Campaign have produced an excellent briefing that can be used to send a letter to your local MP which can be downloaded here
